Liposuction vs. Lipofreeze

liposuctionAmericans are always looking for easy ways to lose weight. Fad diets, pills, plastic surgery; all are thriving industries in the U.S. One Gallup poll reported that more than half of the people surveyed said they wanted to lose weight. Liposuction is one popular option, as well as a new procedure called Lipofreeze. Read on for a comparison between the two treatments:

How liposuction works:
Your doctor injects a saline numbing medication with a medicine that controls bleeding. Making small incisions, the doctor inserts a hollow tube that breaks up the fat deposits and sucks out the loose fat. This is called tumescent liposuction. Newer techniques utilize lasers to liquefy the fat before removing it. This procedure is not a fast fix for weight loss — it will take a month or so to see results from liposuction. You will need to wear compression bandages until the swelling goes down, and gaining weight during this healing time can seriously mess with your results. It is important to remember that while the liposuction procedure is safe when performed by a qualified doctor, it is still a surgery and poses all the risks that surgery poses.

It’s important to remember that liposuction is not a treatment for obesity; it’s meant to remove fat in areas that haven’t responded to diet or exercise. It is recommended that you be within 30% of your ideal weight to be a candidate for liposuction, and at a stable weight — it makes no sense to undergo surgery to remove fat in areas you were going to lose fat from anyway on a fitness plan or a diet.

How Coolsculpting Works:
Coolsculpting, (also known as Lipofreeze, or cryolipolysis) works by targeting specific areas of fat deposits and applying cold until the fat cells die and are absorbed back into the body as waste. It is an outpatient, non-invasive procedure, and the patient can resume normal activities right away. The treatment process takes about 60 minutes per problem area, and it is recommended that you have at least two treatments per area to see a 25% fat reduction. Once the fat freezing procedure is over, the doctor will massage the area for at least two minutes in order to maximize results. Coolsculpting is also not a fast fix treatment for obesity or weight loss- the results take 2-4 months to completely materialize. Though it takes time, 86% of people who have undergone this procedure report positive results.
